我知道有很多 Windows 用家都喜愛 Mac OS X 的介面，還用了很多方法或軟件將自己的桌面改頭換面，務求令到越近似 Mac OS X 越好，我的好友 Madthiu 就是其中之一:tongue1:，FlyakiteOSX 是其中一個這類 theming 軟件，這次我並不是介紹這個軟件，而是介紹它的網頁，很奇怪吧？:tongue1:

我從 The Apple Blog 的文章 Killer Browser Version of OS X 內得知 FlyakiteOSX 的網頁做得極像 Mac OS X，我便馬上去看一看，雖然我並不是一個 Mac 用家，但我覺得真的很像 Mac OS X:thumb-up1:，就連 theAppleBlog 的文章作者都說曾經在瀏覽器內按過 Cmd+W，真的值得去看看的。:happy:

原來傳言的確是真的，Apple 真的轉用 Intel CPU，在 WWDC 2005 中 Steve Jobs 已經親口確定 Apple 會在下年 2006 年這個時間推出 Intel-based 的 Mac，直到 2007 年年底全線 Mac 就會完成整個過渡。

Steve Jobs 說在最近五年其實 Mac OS X 已經秘密同時支援 PowerPC 及 Intel CPU 了，還示範使用一台用 Intel CPU 的 Mac，利用 "Rosetta" 這個 binary translator 來執行純 Mac 版本的 Microsoft Office for Mac 和 Photoshop CS ，來展示並沒有任何效能上的下降。

這個消息的確令我購買 Mac 的衝動減低，本來我想買 PowerMac 的，但我覺得今代改進並不太大，所以我有點猶豫，現在還証實轉用 Intel CPU，那還有買今代 PowerMac 的理由嗎？我想今次的公佈其實會影響到 Mac 的銷量的，我估計很多和我一樣不急於用 Mac 的人會等待到新一代 Intel-based 的 Mac 推出才購買，而且在售價上還可能有下調的空間呢。

雖然之前我對 Mac 轉用 Intel CPU 有點抗拒，但是深入一想，Mac 吸引人的地方並不是用什麼 CPU，而是 user experience，是由 Operating System（作業系統）及其他軟件所提供的。:happy:

最近在 Apple 界中傳得熱烘烘的就是 Apple 會放棄使用多年由 IBM 製造的 PowerPC，轉用 Intel 的 CPU，網上實在有很多的報導，例如：

• WSJ: Apple considering the use of Intel chips in Macs
• Apple said to mull switch to Intel chips
• Enderle: 'If Intel gets Apple, it could make Intel look brilliant after the fact'
• Analyst: Apple-Intel rumor 'hogwash' (today marks 11th month that Jobs' promised 3GHz G5 is late)

雖然傳得這麼厲害，但我本人覺得 Apple 轉用 Intel 的 CPU 可能性很低．

1. 雖然現在 Intel 和 AMD 都快推出 dual-core 的 CPU，而且在時脈上比起 PowerPC 有優勢，而 dual-core 的 PowerPC 970MP 離推出還有一段時間，但轉用 Intel 後牽涉到的軟件優化是非常複雜的，因為 PowerPC 內有 velocity engine 來處理 3D graphics，如何優化軟件可以利用到 Intel 的 SSE3 是一件非常麻煩的事．
2. 我不知其他 hard-core Apple 迷怎樣想，但我喜歡 Apple 對用家的貼心及其獨特性，包括在 OS，architecture 等，PowerPC 是其中一個原素，我絕不想 Apple 投向 Intel 的陣型．

所以我認同以下一篇文章所講，Apple 是有意傳出轉用 Intel chips 的消息來表達對 IBM 的不滿的，因為最近 IBM 的注意力已經轉向新一代的遊戲機身上而忽略了 Apple．

因為三大遊戲機生產商，Microsoft 的 Xbox 360，Sony 的 Playstation 3 及任天堂的 Revolution 都不謀而合用上 IBM 的 PowerPC 及 Cell Processor，而 Apple 一直期待的新 dual-core PowerPC 及適合於 Notebook 的 PowerPC 就一直是只聞其聲不見其影，還有 Steve Jobs 在上年說的一年內 PowerMac G5 的時脈會到達 3GHz 的宣言到現在還未能實現（現在最快的 PowerPC 970 都只是 2.7GHz），難怪 Steve Jobs 會感到不滿，我估計好戲還在後頭． :P

Why Apple Won't Embrace Intel

在這個題目上我相信很多人都會覺得軟碟已經沒有生存空間，已經可以被淘汰，甚至近來買入或自設的 PC 已經沒有軟碟機這個設備了。

以我所知在 Mac 的世界中，軟碟機已經是退役了很久的，在近數代 iMac，PowerMac 都已經沒有軟碟機的存在了，其實我自己一向都覺得現在已經沒有使用軟碟的必要了，但最近我發覺這並不是絕對的。

對很多 Windows 用家而言，軟碟機是可以放入博物館內的老古董，但對使用其他作業系統的人並不是絕對的，就我而言，我除了有一部使用 Windows XP 的 PC 外，我還有另一部使用 Gentoo Linux 的 PC，最近我想更新主機底板的 firmware，但底板商根本沒有供應在 Linux 底下使用的更新 firmware 的客戶端，只有 Windows 版本的，而 BIOS 內的更新程序就只支援用軟碟來更新，當然就 Windows / Linux dual boot 的用家根本不是一個問題，因為可以在 Windows 內進行更新，但像我這類 PC 內只有 Linux 的用家來說，真是非常諷刺，為什麼 BIOS 內只能支援用軟碟進行 firmware 更新，而沒支援其他媒介例如 CD-ROM，USB Flash disk 等呢？真是只能說一聲「無可奈何」。

雖然本人並不是一個 Mac 用家，但一直以來，我都是很認同 Mac OS 的那一套，介面華麗之餘，又真正方便用家，例如之前 Mac OS X 10.3 Panther 的 Exposé，到現在 Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger 的 Dashboard，Spotlight － 功能等同 Microsoft Longhorn 備有搜尋功能的檔案系統 WinFS（但已經確定延期，不能及時嵌入 Longhorn ）等，都是完全為用家而設，而 Microsoft Windows 不論在功能及介面上都是一直跟著 Mac OS 走的，如今一個資深的 Windows 用家 Paul Thurrott ，亦他寫的一篇 Windows Longhorn Build 5048 Review 中寫了以下一段說話，可見 Mac OS 的確有它的一套，當然如果想了解多些 Windows Longhorn 的話亦都可以看看這篇評論． :P

I have to be honest here. After a year without a single new Longhorn build and very little concrete information about what was going on with the project, I had high expectations for build 5048. And a pre-WinHEC briefing with the software giant did nothing to assuage those hopes. Plus, I've seen advanced Longhorn UI work and I knew how cool this thing was going to be.

Build 5048 communicates none of that. And that's a shame, because Microsoft had a chance to ramp up the momentum of a product that, quite frankly, could use a little momentum. On the one hand, we have Windows XP with SP2, which many people describe as "good enough," a phrase that will haunt Microsoft for years to come as it tries to foist new Windows and Microsoft Office versions on them with decreasing success. On the other hand, I present the competition, Linux and Mac OS X. The Linux market may be convoluted and disjointed, but Linux, too, is "good enough," and it's free, along with "good enough" applications like OpenOffice.org and better Web browsers, like Firefox.

It gets worse. Apple's Mac OS X, recently upgrade to version 10.4 ("Tiger," see my review) is more than "good enough." In many ways, OS X is simply better than Windows, especially for experienced computer users, and Tiger rubs Microsoft's nose in the embarrassment of shipping a key Longhorn feature--instant desktop search--a full year ahead of the software giant. That's right folks. We already knew that Microsoft was facing smaller, nimbler competitors. But those competitors are now starting to outperform Microsoft in the feature department too. It's time for Redmond to stop pretending Linux and OS X don't exist.

Anyway, Longhorn build 5048 is pretty boring. That it's boring by design doesn't make me much happier. I do know that the company will add back major new functionality in time for Beta 1 (currently scheduled for June 30, 2005, but you know how those release dates have a way of slipping) and then again for Beta 2 (a nebulous release that Microsoft will not commit a date to). But sitting here in early May 2005, surveying the state of Longhorn, it's not pretty. Longhorn build 5048 is a disappointment. Here's what I found out about this build during a busy week of testing.
